The Form Four student was allegedly killed by a stray bullet from the police.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched an investigation after a Form Four student was killed by a stray bullet on Sunday, June 12, at Lakeview, Nakuru County.

In a statement on Tuesday, June 14, the Authority stated that immediate reports indicated that there was police involvement and a Rapid Response team had been deployed to probe the matter.

According to IPOA, the dispatched team has already interviewed some of the witnesses TO the Sunday incident and contacted police officers including commanders.

This was aimed at obtaining all the relevant information regarding the unfortunate incident.

The Authority stated that action would be taken if there could be any criminal culpability when investigation into the shooting is concluded.

"Where criminal culpability is established, the Authority shall make recommendations, including but not limited to prosecution," IPOA stated.

The Form Four student, Whitney Atieno, was hit by a stray bullet as the police were going after the notorious criminal gang in Nakuru, ‘Confirm’.

She was rushed to the Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital but later succumbed to the injury as the bullet had penetrated her chest.

The shooting led to a demonstration of the area locals who were on the road demanding for justice for the slain student.
