The High Court has cleared Mike Sonko to vie for the Mombasa gubernatorial seat in the August polls.
According to the ruling issued on Wednesday, July 13, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was unreasonable for refusing to accept certified copies of Sonko's academic papers.
The Former Nairobi Governor had sued IEBC for barring him from contesting in the Mombasa gubernatorial race.
Sonko argued that the move by the electoral body to bar him was improper, unprocedural, and unlawful.
“The respondents’ decisions to exclude the applicant from vying for a gubernatorial seat in the 2022 elections are premature and prejudicial and they individually and collectively are oppressive and have already caused irredeemable damage to the applicant,” the suit read in part.
It is now expected to be a tight race in the Mombasa Gubernatorial race between Nassir Abdullswamad Sheriff (ODM), Hassan Omar (UDA), and Sonko (Wiper).
