The proposal to change the constitution to scrap term limits was first made by Fafi MP Yakub Salah.

Days after a UDA MP made a proposal to scrap the presidential term limits and replace them with an age limit, President William Ruto on Wednesday gave his take on the matter.

Addressing the Kenya Kwanza Parliamentary Group meeting, the President did not welcome the proposal.

Ruto challenged the MPs to focus on the needs of the people adding that the move to amend the constitution to scrap the term limit is selfish.

"Do not spend your time pushing for selfish and self-serving legislation like the changing of the constitution to remove term limits. My focus is service to the people," he said.

The proposal to change the constitution to scrap the presidential term limit was first made by Fafi MP Yakub Salah.

The proposal attracted criticism from Kenyans who deemed the move as retrogressive.

The UDA party also distanced itself from the MP's proposal saying his view does not represent the party's position.

UDA chairperson Johnson Muthama said the party supported the current term limit and stood open for democracy.

"Please take note of this, as the National Party, Chairman I wish to categorically state that Hon. Yakub's made a personal statement which has nothing to do with UDA Kenya," he added.
