The Nairobi County Assembly’s Health Committee has ordered the immediate closure of all Naivas Supermarket branches within the city.
Speaking on Wednesday, May 14, Mountain View MCA Maurice Ochieng, who is the chairperson of the Health committee, said the decision followed claims that the supermarket stocks expired goods.
Consumers had also raised concerns over health violations concerning food handlers at the supermarket chain.
During a visit to a Naivas outlet, the members of the committee claimed to have found expired products on display.
"We are here at Naivas Moi Avenue, and we have realised that there are expired products on the shelf, putting Nairobians at risk," Ochieng said.

Ochieng also noted that findings included concerns about the hygiene standards of employees handling food products.
"Also, we found out that the people handling this product have not been tested. Therefore, as a committee, we resolve to close all the Naivas outlets in Nairobi so that they can be tested and be given certificates so that they are able to serve Nairobians," he added.
Ochieng issued a warning to other retail chains and urged the County Chief Health Officer to ensure food safety and public health.
"We will not sit back, and we are urging the County Chief Health Officer to move with speed and make sure that Nairobians are safe with food because most of these facilities have expired products," he said.
Naivas is yet to issue a statement on the matter.
