US Senator Jim Risch has called on President Donald Trump's administration to reassess its relationship with Kenya following President William Ruto's remarks in China.
While referring to Ruto's statement on Kenya being co-architects of a new world order alongside China, the Senator, on Tuesday, May 13, opined that Kenya was pledging allegiance to China.
Given that Kenya was a non-NATO ally of the US, the senator explained that it would be prudent for the US to reassess its ties with Kenya.
The chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee expressed that the US could not rely on leaders who embrace China.

“Just last month, President Ruto declared that Kenya, a major non-NATO ally, and China are 'co-architects of a new world order.' That’s not just alignment to China; it’s allegiance," read the statement in part.
"I submit for the record the text of that speech. Relying on leaders who embrace Beijing so openly is an error. It’s time to reassess our relationship with Kenya and others who forge tight bonds with China."
During former President Uhuru Kenyatta's regime, China was a key ally of Kenya and funded several projects like the SGR and the Nairobi Expressway.
However, when Ruto took office, his administration was perceived to be leaning towards the West, especially towards the US. This saw him accorded a state visit in May last year, even as Kenya was declared a major non-NATO ally of the US.
Consequently, Ruto's recent visit to China has led to concerns among the US leaders.
During the China trip, Kenya secured mega infrastructure deals, including the construction of the Rironi-Mau Summit Road.
