Mutunga joined the Mombasa-based non-governmental organisation as a board member in 2021.


Muslims for Human Rights (Muhuri) has appointed Chief Justice Willy Mutunga as the chairperson of the board of directors.

Mutunga will now succeed long-serving chairperson Khelef Khalifa.

Muhuri said they look forward to benefiting from Mutunga's grasp of matters of human rights and the law.

His credentials, the body said,  will be critical in the pursuit of its mission of fighting impunity.

Mutunga joined the Mombasa-based non-governmental organisation as a board member in 2021.

"He brings an immense wealth of experience, especially in the civil society and human rights sectors," the notice reads in part.

Muhuri said  Mutunga's track record of defending the law will help boost constitutionalism in Kenya will help them in undertaking key activities.

Mutunga served as the country's Chief Justice from 2011 to 2016. He retired early to pave the way for the recruitment of his successor.
