Bungoma Principal Magistrate Tom Olando on Tuesday morning ordered his unconditional release.

Bungoma-based preacher Eliud Wekesa, christened Yesu Wa Tongaren, has been released from custody.

Bungoma Principal Magistrate Tom Olando on Tuesday morning ordered his unconditional release.

The order was issued after the protection team said the findings of the directorate of criminal investigations did not offer any grounds to charge the accused.

The prosecution in consequence asked the principal magistrate to release the preacher.

His release came on the very day Lawyer George Wajackoyah joined his legal team in a bid to push for his freedom.

Wekesa was last week summoned by the Bungoma DCI officer Elijah Macharia for questioning over his New Jerusalem church and has been in police custody.

The prosecution alleged that there have been criminal activities on indoctrination at his church that might be linked to the Shakahola incident.

His release came after he spent the weekend in a police cell after the court ordered his detention for four days to allow police to conclude the probe.

“The court has agreed and granted permission to the prosecution side to detain the suspect for four more days to allow them to complete the probe and carry out the mental assessment,” Olando ruled on Friday.
