Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has explained what caused the power blackout at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) despite backup generators.
In an update by KAA on Friday, August 25, one of the generators serving JKIA's T1A failed to start resulting power outage in a section of the airport.
"Jambo! Following a nationwide power blackout, one of the generators serving JKIA's T1A & Parking Silo failed to start, resulting power outage in a section of the airport. This has been rectified & all generators are now fully operational. Power has been restored to the affected areas," part of the statement read.
After nearly the two-hour blackout, power was restored at JKIA and other critical Nairobi metropolitan areas according to Kenya Power.

"We have successfully restored power at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and other critical areas within the Nairobi metropolitan. Our teams are working to restore electricity across the country that were affected by the outage," part of the statement by Kenya Power read.
Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen apologised for the power blackout at JKIA noting that he would announce the decision they would make today.
"I am really sorry for what has happened at JKIA with the blackout. There is no excuse worth reporting and there is no reason why our airport is in darkness. I will be announcing the decision we will make tomorrow 9am at JKIA after a meeting with the leadership of the airport. Once again I am sorry," he stated.
