The Kenya meteorological department has issued an advisory cautioning Kenyans of heavy rainfall and strong winds expected across the country over the weekend.

In a statement sent to media houses, the weatherman noted that 27 counties will be affected by the heavy rains.

The counties to be affected include; Siaya, Kisumu, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Murang’a, Embu, Kirinyaga, Tharaka Nithi, Kitui, Machakos, Makueni, Tana river, Garissa, Wajir, Isiolo, Samburu, Migori, Homa Bay, Bomet, Narok Kiambu, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Murang’a, Embu, Meru, Marsabit and Turkana.

Residents of these areas have been request to be on high alert in a bid to avoid being caught off guard by flash floods.

Drivers have also been requested to be on high alert and not to underestimate water levels.


“Heavy rainfall of more than 20mm in 24hrs is expected over the western, central, southeastern and northeastern parts of the country on Friday 22nd January, 2021. The heavy rainfall is expected to continue on Saturday 23rd January over highlands west of the Rif Valley, Southeastern lowlands and highlands east of the Rift Valley.

“The rainfall is likely to reduce in intensity on Sunday 24th January, 2021. The strong easterly to southeasterly winds being experienced over the northwestern region are likely to strengthen to more than 15 m/s while northerly winds of more than 12.9 meters per second (m/s) are expected over eastern parts of the country on Friday 22nd to Saturday 23rd, January 2021,” the statement from the weatherman read in part.
