The 12-member National Police Service Commission on Thursday announced having reached a decision to recruit more servicemen as had been requested by the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai.
The commission, in a full sitting, attended by DCI boss George Kinoti and Interior PS Karanja Kibicho ratified the intended recruitment of at least 5000 officers across the country.
"The National Police Service Commission has approved a request by the Inspector General of police to recruit 5000 Police Constables and 150 Professional Cadet Police Officers," an announcement by the national police service reads in part.
A 2019 biometric registration drive by the Ministry of Interior found that Kenya has 101,288 police officers.
This means a single officer serves at least 390 civilians, while the UN recommends a 1:450 ratio.

A number of reforms have been witnessed in recent days, including the automation of the police occurrence book.
Automation of the National Police Service's human resource management system has also been completed.
