Reasons for his termination were promptly communicated to him - University of Nairobi Council.

The University of Nairobi Council has announced the termination of Prof. Stephen Gitahi Kiama as the institution's Vice-Chancellor.

In a letter seen by Nairobileo.co.ke dated Monday, October 14, Kiama's services as an employee of UoN were terminated on September 27, 2024.

The letter signed by Chairman of Council Chair Prof. Amukowa Anangwe also stated that the reasons for Kiama's termination were communicated to him.

"The university community should rest assured that whenever called upon, the Council will rise to the occasion and discharge its mandate faithfully and within the beacons of law,” the letter read in part.

Just recently, the Council rejected Vice Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama's request for a second term.

This decision stems from ongoing controversies surrounding his leadership, including financial management issues and student protests over increased fees for self-sponsored Master's programs.

Kiama, who initially sought to extend his tenure, later opted for a single term, citing the need to exhaust his leave days due to a heavy workload since 2020.

The Council's rejection was based on allegations that he failed to meet the necessary requirements for reappointment.

The development followed a tumultuous period marked by Kiama's suspension and subsequent return to office, which further complicated his relationship with the Council and university stakeholders.
