The suspect is sad to have demanded Ksh50,000 from the student.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested a university ICT officer who demanded a bribe to alter a student's marks on the university portal.

In a statement, EACC said Evans Matiro Watenya who works at the Cooperative University of Kenya demanded a Ksh 50,000 bribe from a student in order to correct an anomaly in the student’s examination results on the portal.

EACC understands that the student is due for graduation in December 2024.

"The complainant reportedly attained a degree classification of Second Class Honours Upper Division which was mysteriously changed in the portal to Second Class Honours Lower Division and when she went to inquire from the ICT Department, she was told by the suspect that the error could only be rectified if she parted with Ksh 50,000 as ‘tea’ for the suspect," the agency said in a statement.

According to EACC, the student was unable to raise the amount and decided to report the matter to EACC who set up an operation to catch Matiro after verifying the allegations.

"Unable to raise the amount, the complainant reported the matter to EACC which upon verification of the allegations mounted an operation and arrested the suspect within the University compound after he had received Ksh 30,000 being the initial part of the demanded amount," EACC stated.

Following his arrest on Friday, October 11, Matiro was taken to EACC Integrity Centre Police Station where he was processed and later booked at Kilimani Police Station.
