The Ministry of Health has expressed concern following the tragic deaths of three people in Nakuru County after consuming illegal alcohol.

In a statement on Sunday, December 22, Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni highlighted the dangers of indulging in unregulated and unlicensed alcohol, which often contains harmful substances like methanol.

"This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the grave dangers associated with consuming unregulated and unlicensed alcoholic beverages," the statement read in part.

It added, "Illicit alcohol often contains harmful substances such as methanol, which can be fatal. Consuming these substances can lead to serious health consequences, including blindness, organ damage, and even death."

As a result, Muthoni urged the public to take extreme caution when consuming alcohol.

She asked members of the public to only purchase legally registered and approved products to ensure they meet safety standards.

Muthoni also asked the public to avoid alcohol sold by untrustworthy or suspicious sources, as they are often counterfeit and unsafe.

Lastly, the PS encouraged responsible drinking, particularly excessive drinking during the festive season.

"This tragic event underscores the importance of the ongoing nationwide public awareness campaigns led by the Division of drug and Substances Abuse Control within my State Department meant to educate the public on the harmful effects of drugs and substances, including novel nicotine and other emerging tobacco products. We extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives," the statement concluded.
