Professor Kosgey will be out for eight months, according to the Moi University Council.

The Moi University Council has announced a raft of changes at the institution's top management.

In a memo seen by Nairobi Leo, Vice Chancellor Professor Isaac Kosgey was sent on a compulsory eight-month leave.

The council, through its chairman, Professor Noah Midamba, implied that Kosgey had not utilised his 45-day annual leave and had accumulated the days equal to the time he was asked to be out.

It said the leave was meant for the VC's rejuvenation and health wellness, adding that the days he did not go on leave could not be compensated in monetary terms due to the financial crisis the university is grappling with.

"Clause 10 of your employment contract provides for 45 working leave days per annum. However, it has come to the notice of the University Council that you have accumulated a substantial number of leave days equivalent to eight months.

The University Council has unanimously resolved in its meeting held today on 30th January 2025 that you proceed on 8 months of leave and utilize all your accumulated leave days with effect from the date of this letter," the memo partly read.

Kosgey's role will be undertaken in an acting capacity by Professor Kiplagat Kotut.

Moi University Council chairman Noan Midamba announced a host of changes in the institution's top management.

Elsewhere, the council announced that the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic Research and Extension, and student affairs Professor Isaac Kimenge had proceeded on a one-year sabbatical leave.

Kimenge's post will be held by Professor Kayemba Ungeti.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration Planning and Strategy Professor Engineer Henry Kiriyamiti also proceeded on a one-year sabbatical leave.

The council announced suspending the chief varsity's Chief Finance Officer and legal officers.

The changes came days after Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba revoked the appointment of five council members of Moi University.

Through a Gazette Notice dated Friday, January 17, the CS revoked the appointment of Dr Humphrey Kimani Njuguna, Prof Clara Samiji Momanyi, Christopher Khaemba, Eusilah Jepkosgei Ngeny, and Susan Amlango Aletia.

Consequently, he appointed Prof Noah Midamba, Prof Ronald Wasike, Dr Mercy Nyambura Kanyara, Dr Edward Sambili and Anne Weceke Makori to the council.

Notably, Midamba was also tasked with being the council chairperson.

The newly appointed council members will serve for three years effective the date of the notice.

The latest changes by Ogamba came amidst government plans to revive the university which has faced numerous challenges including prolonged strikes and financial difficulties.

Notably, various leaders including the National Assembly's Committee on Education have been pushing for a complete overhaul of the leadership at Moi.
