Nyongesa added that the cause of death was yet to be established. According to the spokesperson, the family will retreat to decide on whether to conduct a postmortem.
"He had been unwell and was in hospital The family is yet to make a decision on whether to take a postmortem," Nyongesa added.
"The family will also speak to the doctors and thereafter we can tell the nation what may have caused his death."
Following his exit from office after the 2022 polls, the former electoral body official maintained a quiet life.
Notably, in March 2024 when Chebukati shared a family photo, a section of Kenyans raised concern over his health as he appeared weak in the photos. No information was revealed as to what was ailing him.
Following his death, Chebukati was mourned by leaders across the political divide, with President William Ruto describing him as a principled and diligent leader.
"Chebukati was a principled and diligent leader who served the nation with integrity. His death is a great loss to our country. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time," Ruto wrote.
