Lawrence Warunge will not stand trial today after the prosecution told the court he was mentally unfit for the hearing.

The murder trial of Lawrence Warunge has been postponed after the prosecution told the Kiambu Law Court that he is still unfit to stand trial.

The Mount Kenya University student was supposed to appear in court on Monday, March 1, 2021, to face trial for the murder of five people in Kiambaa, Kiambu County in January.

Warunge will be taken for a mental examination at the Mathari hospital on March 5. he currently being held at the Industrial Area Remand Prison.

Chief Magistrate Patricia Gichohi allowed the prosecution up to March 15 to issue an update on the suspect's mental health.

The 22-year-old is on trial after he owned up to gruesomely murdering his four family members and a farmhand at their home in Kiambaa.

Warunge hacked to death his father Nicholas Njoroge Warunge, his mother Ann Wanjiku, their adopted nephew Maxwell Njenga, his brother Christian Njenga Njoroge and farmhand James Kinyajui Wambaa.

An autopsy conducted on the bodies of all five victims released on January 11, confirmed Warunge's confession on killing the victims.

Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor in the autopsy report revealed that all five victims had succumbed to multiple stab wounds highly inflicted by the same person.

On January 26, mental results presented to the court by a psychiatrist revealed that Warunge was unfit for trial.

The court then directed that he be remanded for 30 days after which a mental assessment would be undertaken to establish whether he is ready to stand trial.
