The Association of Kenya Insurers has released a report revealing trends observed in vehicles stolen in the country.
In the report covering 2024, the companies noted that vehicles with the latest registration numbers - the 'KD' number plate series were the most stolen in 2024.
Out of the 327 vehicles stolen in 2024, 50.15 per cent were of the KD number plate series. This was followed by vehicles of the KC number plate series (37.17 per cent) and KB number plate series (10.4 per cent).
In terms of the vehicle make, Toyota accounted for 54.91 per cent followed by Isuzu at 12.88 per cent.
Other notable brands that were reported stolen last year were Mazda at 7.06 per cent, Nissan at 5.83 per cent and Mitsubishi at 3.99 per cent.
On the other hand, the report highlighted that thieves targeted lorries and saloon cars.
Most of the vehicles stolen were either parked (31.91 per cent) or stolen during hijackings at 7.24 per cent.
Regarding colour, thieves stole more vehicles painted white in comparison with those painted silver and black.
"Most stolen vehicles had an insured value of less than Ksh1 million (32.52 per cent). Those between Ksh1 million and Ksh2 million represented 26 per cent," read the report in part.
"Those above Ksh 3 million represented 27.3 per cent. The most expensive vehicle reported stolen was a Mitsubishi Lorry valued at Ksh12.2 million."
