According to the policy published in February, the Ministry of Transport proposed to toll new roads and existing roads which have been improved.

Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina has cautioned the government against tolling existing roads in the new plan.

In a statement on Thursday, March 20, the Senator opined that the government only needed to toll new roads that they built.

He warned that the tolling of existing roads would not sit well with many kenyans and ultimately resisted.

"Build new roads and toll them, if you attempt to charge the existing roads we will resist," he stated.

The Senator made the remarks after Treasury CS John Mbadi supported the move by the Ministry of Transport to propose the tolling of roads in the country.

However, he noted that the plan needed to be implemented in a way that would not affect Kenyans.

“I am for tolling roads. People should be charged for services. We must look at the way we structure our payment," he stated during a TV interview.

"There is already the Road Maintenance Levy, so this tolling should be structured in a way that we are also fair to citizens."
