The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has closed down nine filling stations selling adulterated fuel.
In a notice on Monday, March 31, the authority said it conducted a total of 5,978 tests at 1,360 stations between January and March, and 1347 stations were found to be compliant, while 13 did not meet the required standards.
“During the period January- March 2025, a total of 5,978 tests were conducted at 1,360 petroleum sites. From the tests, 1347 (99.04%) of the sites were found to be compliant. However, the tests from 13 (0.96%) sites turned out to be non-compliant,” the notice read in part.
EPRA noted that out of the 13 stations, three have been reopened after paying penalties.
The three stations include: Lowisa Oil Filling Station in Embu, Kamaruso filling Station in Nandi, and Hass Petroleum Garissa Junction Service Station.

The Authority closed down nine other stations, which include; Ahero Stage Filling Station in Kisumu, Wamuini Filling Station in Endebess, Trans Nzoia County, Miami Energy Filling Station in Rongai, Kajiado County, and Mungatsi Filling Station in Busia.
EPRA also closed Wangu Filling Station in Murang' a, Sofa Energy Service Station in Maragua, Kobodo Filling Station in Homa Bay, 61 Bus Filling Station in Nairobi, El Bethel Filling Station in Marsabit.
On the other hand, the authority is investigating an illegal fuel site in Mazeraz in Kilifi County which was found storing diesel in drums and was adulterated with domestic kerosene.
Further, EPRA urged members of the pubic to report suspected cases of fuel adulteration to the authority.
“The Authority maintains a hotline number (0709 366 000), operational during normal working hours to enhance enforcement and compliance activities,” EPRA added.
