The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) has condemned remarks made by Trans Nzoia County Executive Committee Member (CECM) Phanice Naliaka against Woman Representative Lillian Siyoi Walubengo.
In a statement on Sunday, March 30, KEWOPA argued that her comments trivialized women’s leadership and reinforced harmful stereotypes.
The association criticized the remarks as not only disrespectful but also detrimental to the fight for gender equality and the eradication of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
"KEWOPA is deeply concerned by the remarks made by Trans Nzoia County Executive Committee Member Phanice Naliaka, which trivialize women’s leadership and reinforce harmful stereotypes. Such statements are not only disrespectful but also detrimental to the ongoing fight for gender equality and the eradication of harmful cultural practices such as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)," the statement read.

KEWOPA emphasized that leadership should be based on merit rather than outdated societal perceptions, calling FGM a violation of human rights.
"Women in leadership are defined by their vision, competence, and dedication to service, not by outdated perceptions rooted in harmful practices. FGM is a recognized violation of human rights, and no woman should be subjected to stigma or discrimination based on her background. KEWOPA stands firm in ensuring that all women, including FGM survivors, are accorded the respect, dignity, and opportunities they deserve," the statement continued.
KEWOPA warned that Kenya has made significant strides in addressing gender discrimination and harmful traditional practices, further urging leaders to use their platforms to champion women’s rights rather than spread inflammatory narratives.
"Kenya has come a long way in addressing gender discrimination and harmful practices, and such remarks would erode these gains. We urge all leaders to use their voice for advancing the rights of women, not for spreading inflammatory narratives," the statement added.
Demanding accountability, KEWOPA called on Naliaka to retract her statement and issue a public apology.
"KEWOPA calls for a retraction of the statement and a public apology. We reaffirm our commitment to advocating for policies that promote women’s leadership, dignity, and equal representation in all spheres of society. Every leader must recognize the responsibility they hold in shaping a progressive and inclusive Kenya," the statement concluded.
