Irungu Nyakera has called on the Mt Kenya region to rally behind former President Uhuru Kenyatta and former DP Rigathi Gachagua.
In response to media headlines which credited Ruto as the Mt Kenya kingpin, Nyakera noted that the region needed to support its leaders.
Through his X account on Thursday, April 3, the former KICC board chair explained that the support would not be an act of defiance but a move to ensure that their political voice is well-represented.
Nyakera added that supporting their own leaders would give them a better bargaining power during the formation of governments.
Therefore, he expressed that the region could not outsource a voice to represent their interests.

"Mt. Kenya has always stood tall in national politics, not by outsourcing its voice, but by grooming its own leaders. It is these leaders who are then authorized to negotiate firmly and fairly with other regions and communities. From the days of Jomo to Kibaki and Uhuru, the region has never lacked capable leadership. And we should not lack now.
"To defend its political voice, Mt Kenya must rally behind Rigathi Gachagua and Uhuru Kenyatta, not as an act of defiance but as a duty to preserve our political identity, interests, and bargaining power," read the statement in part.
Nyakera made the remarks a day after his appointment to the KICC board was revoked by Ruto.
In the weeks, leading to his sacking, he had been critical of various government programs such as the Social Health Authority (SHA).
He also lamented over the treatment of former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu. Waititu is currently in prison after being convicted of corruption-related charges.
“Over six land cruisers came for Ferdinand Waititu from Industrial Area prisons on Monday, March 24, and transferred him to Kamiti Maximum. What Waititu is going through is not justice; it’s political warfare disguised as law. It’s panic. It’s fear. Fear of his return," he lamented.
