The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched a probe into the misconduct of police officers during the National Drama Festivals at Lions Primary School in Nakuru County on Thursday, April 10.
In a statement, IPOA Chairperson Issack Hassan said the authority had deployed its officers during the event to monitor police operations.
“This legal mandate led IPOA to deploy officers to Lions Primary School in Nakuru, where the National Drama Festivals were scheduled to take place. Prior events indicated oversight intervention was required urgently; especially because minors, who enjoy special privileges would be involved in the festivals,” read part of the statement.
Hassan noted that three police units consisting of KPS, APS, and DCI officers were deployed to the event and were armed with batons and guns.
He also mentioned that the officers who were in both uniform and civilian clothes had blocked the main entrance, and only accredited officials were allowed to gain entry.

The IPOA chairperson pointed out that the authority launched investigations after the deployed police officers lobbed teargas canisters during the event.
“Circumstances that have led IPOA to launch an investigation were observed, and most notably, tear gas canisters were lobbed,” Hassan stated.
He also said the authority is aware of complaints about police officers using force against journalists, students, teachers, and members of the public.
Hassan emphasized that IPOA would carry out independent investigations, and any officer found culpable of misconduct would face disciplinary action.
“IPOA will continue to monitor the situation closely and carry out impartial investigations. If any officer is found criminally responsible, IPOA will recommend prosecution or disciplinary action. These recommendations will be promptly submitted to the relevant authorities,” Hassan added.
Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, has also directed the Internal Affairs Unit of the National Police Service to investigate police officers deployed during the event and present a report within 21 days.
