Former Interior CS Fred Matiang'i has returned to Kenya from the US.

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has jetted back into the country from the United States (US), where he has been working with the World Bank.

Matiang’i arrived in the country on Thursday, April 17 night via the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

The former Interior CS was received by several leaders, including Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo, and UDA Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba.

Matiang’i’s return comes after the Jubilee Party endorsed him to vie for the presidency in the 2027 general election.

Speaking on January 25, during a meeting with local Jubilee leaders in Narok County, Kioni announced that the Uhuru Kenyatta-led party has settled for Matiang'i to challenge President Ruto in the 2027 polls.

"Fred Matiang’i is the one they are saying is in Jubilee. He worked with the party for 10 years. So, we, as the Jubilee party, have our own candidate, Fred Matiang'i. He will face off with other candidates to ensure President William Ruto goes home. You have to start registrations and send the message to the people, and we don’t want fights,” Kioni remarked.

The Jubilee Secretary General also noted that the party wanted a candidate from a minority community to lead the nation.

“We want a candidate from a minority community. Let us be united and cast our vote in one basket. The other time we voted for Ruto, and others voted for Raila Odinga. Even this round we will also vote in a candidate from a minority community,” Kioni added.

Meanwhile, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has hinted at working with Matiang’i to form a united political front ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking on Tuesday, April 15, Gachagua said talks are underway to form a new alliance with like-minded leaders.

“We have listened to Kenyans who have said we come together and form a government that would take the country forward.

"I’m doing that with Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, George Natembeya and Fred Matiang’i. I want to assure the people of Kenya that we have a formula to give you good leadership," said Gachagua.
