"The commitment to an immediate cessation of hostilities marks a crucial step toward ending the conflict."

The government has welcomed the recent peace agreement between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) administration and the M23 rebel group.

In a statement on Sunday, April 27, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi praised the breakthrough as a significant step toward stability in the region.

"Kenya welcomes the peace agreement reached between the Democratic Republic of Congo administration and the M23 rebel group during the Qatar talks," he said.

Mudavadi noted that the commitment to an immediate cessation of hostilities brings hope to a region long scarred by conflict.

"The commitment to an immediate cessation of hostilities marks a crucial step toward ending the conflict and offers much-needed relief to the innocent people of the DRC, who have borne the brunt of the violence," he added.

Mudavadi also called on both parties to fully adhere to the ceasefire and prioritize a lasting solution.

"We urge both parties to uphold the ceasefire and work towards a sustainable peace to prevent further loss of life, destruction, and the continued suffering of civilians, especially women and children," he concluded.

The DRC government and the M23 rebel group made a joint declaration to work toward a ceasefire in Eastern DRC following Qatar-mediated peace talks.

Both sides agreed to an immediate cessation of hostilities and pledged to continue negotiations to address the root causes of the conflict.

Qatar played a role in facilitating the dialogue, creating a neutral platform that enabled direct talks between the DRC government and M23 representatives.

Despite this progress, the talks faced serious challenges.

M23 demanded the release of prisoners linked to Rwanda and political recognition, but the DRC government rejected these demands, citing the independence of its justice system and the seriousness of crimes committed.
