Kasipul MP Charles Were was Thursday, April 30, shot and killed by unknown assailants on a motorcycle on Ngong Road, Nairobi County. 

Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Were was Thursday evening, April 30, shot and killed by unknown assailants on a motorcycle on Ngong Road, Nairobi County.

According to eyewitness reports, the MP was ambushed by two gunmen who were trailing his vehicle on a motorbike.

The attackers reportedly disembarked from the motorbike and shot Were at close range in what appears to be a targeted killing.

The incident took place at around 7:30 PM. The MP’s driver, who was with him at the time, survived the attack.

Were was rushed to a Nairobi hospital following the shooting but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The slain MP was mourned by his colleagues including Saboti MP Caleb Amisi who noted that he will be remembered for his commitment to service and leadership.

"I'm deeply saddened by the tragic killing of the MP for Kasipul in Nairobi. His commitment for service and leadership will be remembered. My thoughts are with his family and constituents. May be rest in peace," he said.

On the other hand, Butere MP Tindi Mwale expressed shock following Were's killing, stating, "This is unbelievable; rest in peace my brother Hon. Charles Ong'ondo Were."

Were was first elected to the National Assembly in 2017 on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket and was re-elected in 2022. 

During his tenure, he served on the Departmental Committee on Blue Economy and Irrigation and was appointed Vice Chairperson of the National Assembly's Committee on Cohesion and Equal Opportunities.

Before entering politics, Were held leadership roles in the private sector. 

He held a Bachelor of Business Management and a Diploma in Business Management from Mt. Kenya University, as well as a Certificate in Computerised Accounting from Meru University.
