Former rugby sevens star Humphrey Kayange has been appointed Chair of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Coordination Commission for the Dakar 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games.
In a statement on Wednesday, April 30, the IOC said President Thomas Bach selected him for the role following a request from President-elect Kirsty Coventry.
Coventry, who had held the position, stepped down in March after being elected as the next IOC President.
In his new role, Kayange will spearhead efforts to oversee and support the planning and organization of the 4th edition of the Summer Youth Olympic Games.
Additionally, he will work closely with key stakeholders, including National Olympic Committees, International Federations, and local authorities, to ensure a smooth delivery of the games in Dakar, Senegal.

Speaking following his appointment, Kayange said he is looking forward to helping young people pursue excellence.
"My vision is driven by empowering young athletes. I’m honoured to serve the Olympic Movement and help provide a platform for young people to pursue excellence. Dakar 2026 will unite young athletes from around the world, celebrating African innovation and the Olympic spirit," he said.
Kayange has served in the Dakar 2026 Coordination Commission since 2022 and has been an IOC Member and Athletes’ Commission representative since 2021.
Beyond his Olympic responsibilities, the IOC noted that he serves at the Executive Committee of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
Locally, Kayange has held prominent roles such as Chair of the National Olympic Committee Athletes’ Commission, board member of the Kenya Academy of Sports, and past involvement with the Kenya Rugby Union.
