Officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Friday, May 16, arrested the University of Nairobi (UoN) Council Chairperson, Amukowa Anangwe.
Anangwe was apprehended on Friday at the Kisumu International Airport and airlifted to Nairobi for grilling.
EACC officers also arrested Dr. Ahmed Sheikh Abdullahi, Daniel Brian Ouma, and Carren Kerubo Omwenga, who are members of the UoN council.
The four are set to be interrogated at the EACC headquarters in Nairobi over allegations of abuse of office before being arraigned in court.
Reports indicate that the top UoN officials were arrested over the irregular appointment of Ouma as Acting Chief Operations Officer.

The arrest of the four officials comes amid the ongoing leadership wrangles in UoN over the hiring of a new Vice Chancellor.
The Public Service Commission (PSC) on Thursday said it had conducted a competitive recruitment process for the University of Nairobi’s VC and Deputy VC positions.
“The Commission advertised the vacancies, shortlisted qualified applicants as per the requirements set out in the advert, and interviewed candidates accordingly. The top candidates were ranked based on their performance in the interview process and the merit list forwarded to the Chairperson of the Council of the University of Nairobi for appointment in consultation with the Cabinet Secretary in line with Section 35(1)(a)(v) of the Universities Act, Cap 210,” PSC stated.
The drama revolving around the leadership changes began on Thursday last week after Prof Bitange Ndemo rejected his appointment as the VC.
In a letter dated May 5, 2025, the UoN council appointed Francis Jackim Mulaa as Acting Vice Chancellor for six months to allow time for Ndemo’s transition back to the country.
However, Ndemo distanced himself from the appointment, describing the process as unprocedural.
