Mwangaza was affected by tear gas fumes after police threw a canister into her vehicle.

Former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza and her driver were hospitalized on Sunday, May 18, after the police lobbed a teargas canister into her vehicle in Meru County.

Mwangaza was holding a charity event dubbed ‘Okolea’ in Tigania East when the police arrived and threw teargas canisters to disperse the people attending the event.

One canister was reportedly thrown into the former Meru governor’s vehicle while she and her husband were inside.

A viral video seen by Nairobileo.co.ke showed Mwangaza in tears and choking on the canister gas.

Mwangaza and her driver were rushed to the hospital for medical attention. Mwangaza was affected by the teargas fumes while her driver sustained a head injury during the melee.

She had invited people living with disabilities to receive assistance through her Okolea charity initiative.

Political activist Michael Makarina condemned the incident and asked the government to stop humiliating Mwangaza.

“Gachagua is holding meetings, Matiang’i is holding meetings, everyone is holding meetings, are women not people? Are people living with disabilities not people? I want to tell this government of William Ruto, you have intelligence, you have people who tell you the truth, investigate,” Makarina stated.

Human rights lawyer Mugambi Imanyara, who was part of the delegation, said they are considering taking legal action against the police officers involved.

“Every week we will be meeting, and if they continue like that, we will go to court because it is our right to assemble,” Imanyara said.

Mwangaza exited office as the Meru Governor on March 14 after High Court Judge Justice Bahati Mwamuye upheld the Senate’s decision to impeach her.

Following the ruling, Isaac Mutuma M'Ethingia, who was Mwangaza’s deputy, took over as the new Meru Governor.
