"I'm a licensed firearm holder; I have been a licensed firearm holder since 1995."

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has revealed that he assembled a security team comprising licensed firearm holders following the withdrawal of his government-assigned security detail.

Speaking on Monday, May 19, Gachagua defended his decision, stating that it was necessary to ensure his personal safety in the wake of attacks against him.

"I'm a licensed firearm holder; I have been a licensed firearm holder since 1995. The officers who helped me are also licensed firearm holders, and they are doing so within the provisions of the law. We don't carry illegal weapons," he said.

Gachagua insisted that his move to put together the team was guided strictly by the law and was prompted by concerns over his safety

"In this country, civilians are allowed to have firearms, and since the government withdrew security around me, and there have been attacks against me, it was my responsibility to put up a team of civilian firearm holders to escort me around," the DCP party leader stated.

At the same time, Gachagua claimed that there was a sinister plan to poison him on Sunday, May 18, when authorities were reportedly going after him.

He revealed that he received an intelligence report that some individuals wanted to launch a chemical attack on his convoy.

According to Gachagua, the biochemical attack would have seen him brain-dead in 3 months.

"Their instructions were that they should poison me through inhaled chemicals that would paralyse my brain within 3 months. This was the intent and the purpose of the whole operation," he claimed.

Further, Gachagua claimed that there was also a plan to plant arms in his convoy during the Sunday operation.

"This killer squad has been carrying out extrajudicial killings and abductions. They had clear instructions to plant arms and weapons in our convoy to provide evidence to arrest us and get evidence that they could charge us with in court," he stated.
