The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection has disbursed Ksh 3.52 billion for the April Inua Jamii Programme.

In a statement, the State Department for Social Protection and Senior Citizen Affairs, PS Joseph Motari, said the funds will benefit 1,760,510 beneficiaries who are enrolled in the programme.

“The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, through the State Department for Social Protection and Senior Citizen Affairs, has released Ksh three billion, five hundred and twenty-one million, and twenty thousand (3,521,020,000) for payment to 1,760,510 beneficiaries enrolled in the Inua Jamii Program,” Motari stated.

The Social Protection PS noted that the Inua Jamii Cash Transfer Programme remains a cornerstone of the government’s social protection strategy.

The Inua Jamii programme is a government Cash Transfer initiative that supports the most vulnerable members of the community by providing them with a stipend to cushion them from poverty, hunger and improve their lives.

“It aims to alleviate poverty and promote the well-being of society's most vulnerable members, including older persons aged 70 and above, orphans and vulnerable children, and persons living with severe disability,” Motari added.

On February 24, the Ministry of Labour announced that the Inua Jamii funds will be paid via the M-Pesa platform to enable beneficiaries to access the services easily.

Previously, the money was transferred through the banks, where they would be required to travel to withdraw the money.

"The government has adopted M-Pesa as the primary mode of disbursing funds under the Inua Jamii Programme to improve efficiency, accessibility, and security. Beneficiaries who do not have an active M-Pesa line are encouraged to register at any Safaricom or M-Pesa agent countrywide.

"This eliminates the need for beneficiaries to travel long distances for SIM card registration, as inaccurately reported in the article," the Ministry stated.
