IPOA said it would act based on its findings and ensure accountability.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into a fatal shooting incident that occurred on Thursday, June 5, in Angama Mara, Narok County, where police officers allegedly opened fire on civilians.

In a statement on Friday, June 6, IPOA Chairperson Ahmed Issack Hassan said a Rapid Response Team was deployed early Friday to establish the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.

“Early this morning, Friday, 6 June 2025, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority dispatched a Rapid Response Team to investigate the fatal shooting of several people and the serious injuries sustained by others on Thursday, 5 June 2025,” he said.

Hassan noted that the incident took place after police reportedly opened fire on a group of individuals said to have invaded private property within the Angama Conservancy.

“In line with the provisions of Section 7(1)(a)(x) of the IPOA Act, CAP 86 of the Laws of Kenya which mandates the investigation of deaths and serious injuries resulting from police actions, the dispatched team has been instructed to gather all information relevant to uncovering the circumstances surrounding the incident,” he added.

While expressing sympathy to the affected families, Hassan urged residents to remain peaceful and allow investigations to proceed unhindered.

“Meanwhile, the Authority extends its condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones and to those who were injured. It also appeals to local residents to remain calm and allow the due process of law to take its course,” he said.

Hassan further assured the public that IPOA would act based on its findings and ensure accountability.

“IPOA will make appropriate recommendations to the relevant State agencies and will update the public on its findings upon the conclusion of its investigations,” he concluded.
