Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock Development Mutahi Kagwe has defended the Gen Zs involved in the recent June protest against property destruction claims.

Speaking on Friday, July 2025, Cs Kagwe raised alarm over organized criminal groups that took advantage of peaceful protests to cause chaos, steal, and vandalize properties.

The CS further warned those causing chaos, adding that the government was keen on maintaining peace in various cities where criminals were slowly leading the country into anarchy in the name of demonstrations.

“Don’t be lied to. It was not the children demonstrating on the streets that were responsible for the destroyed police stations or property. It is not Gen Z demonstrators who are doing those things. These things are planned by criminals,” Cs Kagwe stated.

Kagwe further urged citizens to remain vigilant and take up their civic responsibility to protect not only themselves but also the nation and its democracy.

“We must protect our democracy so that it does not become anarchy.”

The Agriculture and Livestock Cs voiced these remarks during is ongoing tour in Nakuru County, amid the recent wave of youth-led demonstrations that resulted in massive losses in businesses across towns in the country.

Citing the recent attack on NCPB facilities in Meru and Maua, the CS urged the government to take action against the gangs wreaking havoc, but at the same time allow for the right to peaceful demonstrations.

“Demonstrations are fine. The Constitution protects them. In countries like France, people protest almost every day, but they don’t destroy anything,” Kagwe stated. “We must make sure that criminals do not hide behind our children to destroy what we have built.

The June 2025 nationwide commemoration of lives lost in the 2024 Finance bill demonstrations saw businesses incur heavy losses of millions of shillings.

The government warned against those causing mayhem as investigations on those culpable kicked off in various regions, led by the Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen.
