Former MP Catherine Nyamato Dies

Former nominated Member of Parliament Catherine Nyamato has passed away.

Nyamato died on Wednesday, July 16, evening, after she was rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) has mourned the former nominated MP as a fearless advocate for women's rights.

KEWOPA also said Nyamato inspired generations, and her legacy will live on in the struggle for inclusive leadership.

“KEWOPA mourns the passing of former Nominated MP Hon. Catherine Nyamato, a fearless advocate for women’s rights who boldly championed gender equality, fought against FGM, and inspired generations of women leaders in Kenya. Her legacy will live on in the continued struggle for inclusive leadership and justice for all,” the association stated.

Former IEBC commissioner Roselyn Akombe paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Nyamato, describing her passing as a deeply personal and devastating loss.

“This loss is so deep. So devastating. Hon. Catherine Nyamato took me in as her own daughter when I was in university and mentored me.

“I have lost my second mother, whom I loved so dearly and who meant so much to our family. Deep condolences to my sisters and brothers,” said Akombe.

Veteran radio presenter Fred Obachi remembered the former lawmaker for her dedication to championing girls empowerment.

“Rest well big sister, the Hon. Catherine Nyamato. Your fight for the empowerment of the girl-child is well documented. Sincere condolences to the family,” Obachi mourned.

Nyamato rose to prominence during the late President Daniel Arap Moi’s era where she served as a nominated MP between 1997 and 2002.

The former MP also served as Secretary-General of the League of Kenya Women Voters.
