Governor Waiguru has urged Kenyans to support county governments in achieving equity, inclusion, and social justice.

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has called on Kenyans to support county governments for the realization of equity, inclusion, and social justice.

Speaking on Wednesday, August 13, during the ongoing Devolution Conference in Homa Bay County, Waiguru noted that the devolved units have made great strides in the realization of the devolution dream despite inadequate resources.

She pointed out that rural areas, which were previously marginalized, have undergone tremendous transformation since the inception of County Governments.

Reflecting on the challenges facing devolution, Governor Waiguru noted that inadequate resources and delayed disbursement of funds remain key obstacles for counties.

The Kirinyaga Governor also asked members of the public to confront corruption as a deep-rooted societal problem that requires collective action from all sectors.

Waiguru explained that corruption is not unique to county governments but is a challenge that cuts across both levels of government, learning institutions, the private sector, religious organizations, and the wider society.

“This is not a problem you can just point in one direction. It is a societal challenge that must be addressed as a whole,” said Waiguru

At the same time, Governor Waiguru highlighted Kirinyaga County’s achievements since the inception of devolution.

She showcased agricultural, healthcare, and empowerment programs that have transformed the livelihoods of the Kirinyaga residents.

According to Waiguru, Kirinyaga County is the country’s top rice producer and has made major strides in dairy production.

“In agriculture, we have increased production through inputs and technical support, while enhancing value addition for products like rice and milk. These gains are on display at our pavilion for all to see,” she stated.

Further, she mentioned that Kirinyaga County has strengthened its healthcare services to build a vibrant and healthy community capable of contributing to the socio-economic growth.

On Wednesday, President William Ruto officially opened the 9th Devolution Conference at Homa Bay High School in Homa Bay County.

The 2025 conference is themed “For the People, For Prosperity: Devolution as a Catalyst for Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice.”

Speaking during the conference, President Ruto highlighted the milestones devolution has made since its inception in 2013.

The Head of State said Ksh4trillion has been transferred by the national government to the devolved units to promote the fair distribution of resources.

“We celebrate the transformative milestones of devolution. In just 12 years, we have transferred KSh4 trillion to counties, fostering inclusivity through fair resource distribution and addressing marginalization,” Ruto stated.
