Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura has been recognized internationally after receiving an award from the United Nations Centre in Bangkok, Thailand.

In a statement on Monday, August 25, Mwaura announced the achievement, expressing gratitude and reaffirming his dedication to public service.

"Glad to finally recieve this prestigious award on social justice and youth mentorship from the United Nations Centre in Bankok, Thailand. So very honored for this great recognition. Glory be to GOD almighty. I remain committed to the cause," he said.

Mwaura holds two Master’s degrees and an Honorary Doctorate (Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa) from UGCI-USA.

At just 22 years old, he was appointed to the board of the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) making him the youngest board member.

Mwaura also co-founded the Albinism Society of Kenya (ASK) in 2006, serving as its National Coordinator.

The organization has since implemented several initiatives such as government-funded access to sunscreen and eye care.

Mwaura’s early activism also included coordinating civic education programs and serving as a Program Development Advisor with Voluntary Services Overseas, focusing on human rights in Papua New Guinea.

In 2010, Mwaura was appointed Senior Adviser on Public Policy for Special Interest Groups to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Come 2013, he made history as Kenya’s first Member of Parliament living with albinism, nominated by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to represent Special Interest Groups in the National Assembly.

Later, under the Jubilee Party, he was nominated as Senator to represent Persons with Disabilities.

It was then when Mwaura initiated the first Mr & Miss Albinism East Africa pageant in 2018, and pushed for budget allocations for disability support.

In 2022, President William Ruto tapped Mwaura as his campaign team’s liaison for persons with disabilities in Kiambu County, and later nominated him as Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) in the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary.

However, with the appointment nullified in court, he was appointed and sworn in as Government Spokesperson of Kenya.

Mwaura has received several other awards, including the Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear (CBS), Activist of the Year by the Malaika Tribute Awards, and recognition by Protection International and Terres de l’Homme for his work in human rights and child advocacy.

This comes a month after retired President Uhuru Kenyatta was recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) for his role in championing and advocating for the WHO Pandemic Agreement.

WHO Director General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus awarded Uhuru the certificate of recognition.

"In recognition of your key role in championing and advocating for the WHO Pandemic Agreement that was adopted by the Seventy-eighth World Health Assembly," the WHO certificate reads.
