Meanwhile, on Friday, September 5, Harambee Stars suffered a 3-1 defeat to Gambia at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
The visitors stunned the home crowd by racing to a commanding lead before halftime, leaving Harambee Stars with little chance of recovery.
The first goal came in the 12th minute when Sheriff Sinyan rose highest to head home from a corner.
Gambia doubled their advantage in the 25th minute through Brighton forward Yankuba Minteh, who showed composure to finish off a well-worked move.
Just before the break, Musa Barrow made it 3-0 with a brilliant volley that silenced the crowd and highlighted Kenya’s defensive frailties.
Kenya struggled throughout the first half as foreign-based players looked disconnected from their locally based teammates.
Coach Benni McCarthy later defended his decision to rely heavily on overseas talent, arguing that the higher level of experience was necessary in World Cup qualifiers.
"I will give you my honest assessment. If I played CHAN players we get ten. That is the honest truth," he said in an interview after the match.
In the second half, the introduction of CHAN players such as Manzur Okwaro and Alpha Onyango injected pace and urgency, but the deficit was too big to overcome.
Captain Michael Olunga pushed forward and created a few chances, but it was substitute Ryan Ogam who finally found the net in the 82nd minute with a finish that served as consolation.
The defeat effectively ended Kenya’s chances of qualifying for the World Cup.
Harambee Stars remain fifth in Group F with six points from seven matches, just ahead of Seychelles at the bottom.
