Raila's body was to be taken to Bondo by road.

The national funeral committe has made changes in the final journey of deceased ODM leader Raila Odinga.

Initially, it had been planned that the body would be ferried to Bondo by road upon landing in Kisumu and viewed by the public.

But that would not happen.

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said the body would be flown to Bondo later Saturday, October 18.

Omollo suggested that the change in plan was necessitated by the need to stretch the time scheduled for the public to view the body.

He explained that the team handling the protocols wants everyone to be given the chance to view the body of Raila and pay their last respects.

With the numbers surging by the second, the viewing might run late into the evening, hence making it inconvenient to transport the body by road to Bondo, as the body ought to get home before darkness.

"The numbers keep increasing. By the time the viewing ends, it would be too late to travel by road, and we need to get to Bondo before nightfall," the PS said.

The plan changed after another one on Friday, October 17.

The committee announced that Raila's body would not be taken to his Karen home for the night stay ahead of the final flight to Kisumu.

Instead of Karen, the body was taken to the Lee Funeral Home, where it was prepared for the journey to Kisumu.

The KDF plane touched down at Kisumu International Airport moments past 8 am; the body was then transferred to another aircraft, which flew it to the Mamboleo grounds, where thousands of mourners gathered to pay their last respects.

Raila took his last breath on October 15, while receiving treatment in India.

The veteran politician suffered a heart attack while on his morning walk.

He is set to be laid to rest at his home in Bondo on Sunday, October 19.
