The Senator reminded the county administration of its constitutional mandate and accountability obligations.

Trans Nzoia Senator Allan Chesang has hit out at Governor George Natembeya, accusing his administration of presiding over a deteriorating health system that has significantly affected residents.

Speaking in an event on Monday, November 24, Chesang reminded the county administration of its constitutional mandate and accountability obligations.

"Health is a devolved function, and the Governor is the principal officer responsible for the management and performance of the health sector in Trans Nzoia County. While the county may be facing challenges including delays in SHA disbursements no circumstance justifies the persistent shortage of medicines, inadequate facilities, or the lack of basic medical attention in our hospitals," he said.

Chesang cited a recent incident involving the loss of a child’s life, arguing that the disaster reflected the gravity of systemic failures affecting the county’s health sector.

"A child recently lost their life due to negligence by hospital staff. This is a grave and unacceptable failure within our healthcare system. Such preventable tragedies are a direct indictment of the county’s inability to safeguard the lives of its residents," he added.

Chesang insisted that continued silence would only deepen the suffering of residents, adding that it was his responsibility as an elected leader to speak out when essential services were failing.

"Trans Nzoia cannot continue to lose its people because essential healthcare is either unavailable or dysfunctional. Let it be clearly understood: this is not politics. This is a call of duty and accountability. If I, as a representative of the people, do not question the Governor on these failures, then who will speak for the residents of Trans Nzoia?" he posed.

As such, Chesang demanded immediate reforms and a clear shift in priorities from the county government, insisting that the restoration of the health sector should not be delayed any further,.

"I therefore demand that the Governor immediately prioritize the restoration and strengthening of all county health facilities, ensuring they are properly equipped, adequately staffed, and fully operational. The lives of our people must never be compromised by systemic neglect," he further said.

This comes months after Natembeya lashed out at critics who accused him of tribalism, pointing fingers at Chesang, whom he blamed for fueling the claims.

Speaking in an interview on Thursday, April 17, Natembeya called out Chesang over the remarks, highlighting his decision to appoint the senator's fiancée to his cabinet.

The governor questioned Chesang's silence regarding his fiancée's position in the county government but made tribal claims against him.

"My senator, Allan Chesang, is the one making people say that I am tribal. His fiancée is my cabinet minister. Why doesn't he tell his wife to leave the government? Kenyans don't know that. Because of hypocrisy, you think I am the bad one. I have appointed his wife to my cabinet,” he said.
