Leo Muthende routed the United Opposition candidate in the Mbeere North by-election.

Mbeere North MP-elect Leo Muthende says he is prepared to defend his win in court should his competitors move there.

A lawyer aligned to the United Opposition had hinted at the side challenging the UDA candidate's win in court over alleged electoral malpractices.

Speaking for the first time after he was declared the winner in the Mbeere North MP by-election, Muthende said he was well-prepared to argue his case against his competition.

According to him, his win came despite the alleged goonism on the side of his opponent.

He promised to demonstrate the foregoing in court should his win be challenged, adding that he did not violate any electoral law.

"They want to go to court; my lawyer is very ready. In fact, I am the one who should go to court. I have evidence of them bringing violence during the by-election. There are no ground rules I violate. I am going to source all my evidence from the media. I am the one with the right to go to court," he said.

Meanwhile, he said he was focused on serving the constituents of Mbeere North following his election.

Muthende will replace Geoffrey Ruku, who was nominated to the Cabinet earlier this year.

He garnered 15,802 votes to rout Newton Karish of the DP party.

Karish garnered 15,308 votes.

Welcoming the victory, UDA noted that voters in Mbeere North turned to the ballot as a way of resisting intimidation and uncertainty, with the election reflecting a broader commitment to lasting development.

Meanwhile, the defeated Rigathi Gachagua-led side dismissed Muthende's win, suggesting it was a product of an unfair game.

They claimed that the state deployed police and goons to disrupt voting. They also decried massive voter bribery and procurement of violence at the disadvantage of the opposition candidate.

Despite the accusations, President William Ruto congratulated the victors, noting it was a good sign ahead of the 2027 vote.

The president noted that the opposition lacked an agenda to sell to the people, warning that the loss in Mbeere North and other areas is an indication of an oncoming loss in 2027.
