Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has issued an update on the ongoing construction of the Kenyatta Avenue viaduct.
In a statement on Thursday, August 27, PS Omollo said the project is making steady progress.
He noted that the construction of the viaduct has entered the superstructure phase, with reinforced concrete piers and pier caps completed.
“Construction has now entered the superstructure phase, with reinforced concrete piers and pier caps completed and precast girders being placed across the piers to form the primary structural members that will carry the elevated roadway,” PS Omollo stated.

According to the Interior PS, the elevated road is designed to bypass major traffic bottlenecks between the Nairobi CBD and Upper Hill, improving mobility while opening up new opportunities for commerce and investment.
“It will fly over congested intersections at Processional Way, Mamlaka Road and Nyerere Road, running past All Saints' Cathedral before ending near the Integrity Centre along Jakaya Kikwete Road, where it will connect smoothly with traffic heading towards Ngong Road and Valley Road,” PS Omollo stated.
He also highlighted that the overpass will incorporate cycle lanes and pedestrian walkways to promote safer and more inclusive movement while strengthening connectivity within Nairobi's wider urban transport network.
Further, PS Omollo said the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is supporting the project through security coordination, road safety awareness and the protection of critical public infrastructure.
The update comes a day after PS Omollo announced that the Kamukunji Historical Grounds in Nairobi have been transformed into a modern public space featuring sports, recreational, environmental and community facilities.
In a statement, PS Omollo said the redevelopment preserves the historical significance of the grounds while creating a facility that can serve the community.
Omollo said the historic grounds had undergone a complete transformation under the Nairobi Rivers Regeneration Project, creating a public space that brings together heritage, recreation, environmental restoration and community life.
"The historic grounds have now been completely transformed through the Nairobi Rivers Regeneration Project into a vibrant public space where heritage, recreation, environmental restoration and community life converge," he remarked.
The upgraded facility features an 11-a-side football pitch, seven-a-side and multipurpose fields, basketball courts and a boxing ring.
It also includes children's play areas, safe walkways, improved sanitation facilities and a mental health corner.
