Kenya has signed a partnership with the Government of Italy and GKSD Group to facilitate the construction of 15 new hospitals across the country.

In a statement on Tuesday, September 9, President William Ruto said the agreement, which was signed at State House Nairobi, will see 13 level 5 county referral hospitals and two level 6 national teaching and referral hospitals constructed in 15 counties.

“At State House Nairobi, signed a major partnership with the Government of Italy and GKSD Group that will deliver 15 new hospitals.

“Under this partnership, we will build 13 Level 5 county referral hospitals and 2 Level 6 national teaching and referral hospitals in 15 counties,” Ruto announced. 

The Head of State mentioned that Kenya currently has 12 hospital beds per 10,000 people, against the World Health Organization benchmark of 25 beds per 10,000 people.

President Ruto noted that the new hospitals will help address the gap and support Kenya’s efforts to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC). 

“These new facilities will significantly expand our hospital capacity, bring specialized medical services closer to communities, and accelerate our journey towards Universal Health Coverage,” Ruto stated. 

According to the President, the level 6 National Referral hospitals will be constructed in Uasin Gishu and Mombasa Counties. 

Meanwhile, the new 13 level 5 hospitals will be set up in Mandera, Kilifi, Kisii, Marsabit, Embu, Narok, Baringo and Turkana, among others. 

This comes days after the government has announced the competition of Mama Rachel Ruto Specialist Hospital-Mutuini in Dagoretti South. 

In a statement on Monday, August 31, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said the hospital has been transformed into a 400-bed Level 5 referral facility, up from its previous capacity of 40 beds. 

PS Omollo noted that the facility is currently being equipped with critical systems including dialysis units and CT scanners. 

According to the Interior PS, the completion of the hospital reflects the government’s commitment to improving healthcare and advancing UHC.  

“A key example is the now-complete Mama Rachel Ruto Specialist Hospital–Mutuini in Dagoretti South, which has been transformed into a 400-bed Level 5 referral facility, up from 40 beds, and is currently undergoing equipping with critical systems including CT scanners, dialysis units and modern theatre equipment,” read the statement. 

PS Omollo also said the facility aligns with the Every Woman Every Newborn Everywhere (EWENE) framework, which seeks to accelerate progress in reducing preventable maternal and newborn deaths.
