Progress of Ongoing Construction of Kabarnet University College in Baringo [Photos]

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has issued an update on the ongoing construction of Kabarnet University College in Baringo County. 

In a statement on Thursday, September 17, PS Omollo said the project is being implemented under direct oversight of the Ministry of Defence and the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF). 

He noted that site clearance has been completed, while construction teams have moved on to deep foundation works.

“The project is being implemented under the direct oversight of the Ministry of Defence and the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), providing focused project management, timely execution and financial accountability. 

“Site clearance is complete, with construction teams now undertaking deep foundation works,” read the statement in part. 

The Interior PS said the first phase of the project will establish key campus infrastructure, including modern tuition and science facilities, a library, auditorium, administration block and a 1,000-bed student hostel.

Omollo also mentioned that the M-PESA Foundation is supporting the project through the renovation and full outfitting of two computer laboratories. 

Further, he said Kabarnet University College has already commenced academic operations from temporary facilities at Moi Teachers Training College in Seretunin, under the mentorship of Moi University.

“The Commission for University Education (CUE) has accredited three initial degree programmes: Bachelor of Education (Science), Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics, and Bachelor of Science in Travel and Tours Management,” he stated. 

This comes weeks after PS Omollo revealed that the construction of the Koitalel Samoei University College (KSUC) in Nandi has reached 85% completion. 

In an update on Friday, September 4, PS Omollo said the project, which commenced in February 2025, is scheduled for completion by October 2026. 

“Commenced in February 2025 under a 24-month programme, the project is now about 85% complete and is targeted for completion by October 2026,” PS Omollo said. 

The Interior Principal Secretary noted that the KSUC campus comprises an administration block and 14 lecture halls. 

Ongoing works at the university include: terrazzo and tiled floors, wall painting, acoustic ceiling boards, second-fix electrical works, plumbing fittings, waterproofing, external painting and landscaping. 

PS Omollo highlighted that the university, which is named after Orkoiyot Koitalel Arap Samoei, is poised to reshape the economy of Nandi Hills.

“The expected influx of students will create demand for housing, transport, food, retail and other services, helping revive a town that has faced job losses following the mechanisation of tea plucking,” he stated.
