Kenya Met Predicts Rain in 32 Counties in New Weekly Forecast

The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast rainfall in 32 counties during the seven-day period from Tuesday, September 29, to Monday, October 5.

The forecast, issued on Tuesday, September 29, indicates that different parts of the country will experience varying weather conditions, including morning and afternoon showers, thunderstorms, sunny intervals and night showers.

According to the forecast, rainfall is expected in parts of Lamu, Kwale, Kilifi, Mombasa, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Mandera, Marsabit, Meru, Embu, Garissa, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Kisumu, Kitui, Laikipia, Machakos, Makueni, Murang'a, Nairobi, Nakuru, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Tharaka-Nithi, Trans Nzoia, Bungoma, Elgeyo Marakwet, Bomet, Kericho, Kisii, Nyamira and Wajir counties.

Morning showers are expected in a few areas and may occasionally spread to several parts of Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana River and Lamu counties.

Morning rains may also occur in a few parts of Marsabit, Wajir, Garissa, Mandera, Nairobi, Taita Taveta, Nyandarua, Nakuru, Kiambu, Machakos, Murang'a, Kirinyaga, Embu, Meru, Nyeri and Tharaka-Nithi counties.

The Meteorological Department also expects sunny intervals in the mornings across most parts of Baringo, Bomet, Bungoma, Busia, Elgeyo Marakwet, Homa Bay, Isiolo, Kajiado, Kakamega, Kericho, Kisii, Kisumu, Kitui, Laikipia, Makueni, Migori, Nandi, Narok, Nyamira, Samburu, Siaya, Trans Nzoia, Turkana, Uasin Gishu, Vihiga and West Pokot counties.

Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are likely in a few parts of Bomet, Bungoma, Busia, Homa Bay, Kakamega, Kericho, Kisii, Kisumu, Migori, Nakuru, Nandi, Narok, Nyamira, Siaya, Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia and Vihiga counties.

Afternoon showers may also occur in parts of Embu, Garissa, Wajir, Marsabit, Mandera, Kiambu, Kilifi, Kirinyaga, Kitui, Kwale, Laikipia, Lamu, Machakos, Makueni, Meru, Mombasa, Murang'a, Nairobi, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Taita Taveta, Kajiado, Tana River and Tharaka-Nithi counties.

Meanwhile, sunny intervals are expected in the afternoons in most parts of Baringo, Isiolo, Samburu, Turkana, Vihiga, Uasin Gishu and West Pokot counties.

The weather agency has further forecast night showers in a few parts of Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu, Mombasa, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Mandera, Marsabit, Wajir, Garissa, Nairobi, Embu, Meru, Nakuru, Busia, Kisumu, Isiolo, Elgeyo Marakwet and Bungoma counties.

Partly cloudy conditions are expected at night in most parts of Baringo, Bomet, Kakamega, Homa Bay, Isiolo, Kajiado, Kericho, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Kisii, Kitui, Laikipia, Machakos, Makueni, Migori, Murang'a, Nandi, Narok, Nyamira, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Samburu, Siaya, Tharaka-Nithi, Trans Nzoia, Turkana, Uasin Gishu and West Pokot counties.

The forecast also points to significant variations in temperatures across the country during the period.

Daytime maximum average temperatures above 30°C are expected in several counties, including Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu, Garissa, Wajir, Isiolo, Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, Marsabit and Turkana.

Night-time minimum average temperatures below 10°C are expected in some parts of Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Nyeri, Nakuru, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Narok, Taita Taveta and Kajiado counties.

Among selected towns, Lodwar and Mandera are forecast to record maximum temperatures of 38°C, while Wajir could reach 36°C and Garissa 35°C.

Other high daytime temperatures are expected in Kisumu at 33°C, Voi at 32°C, Suba at 32°C, Lamu at 31°C, Kakamega at 31°C, Makindu at 31°C, and Kitale, Kisii, Thika and Malindi at 30°C.

The coldest night-time temperatures among the selected locations are forecast in Nyahururu, where the minimum could fall to 5°C.

Other relatively low minimum temperatures are expected in Kitale at 12°C, Eldoret and Kericho at 11°C, Nakuru at 12°C, Narok at 11°C, Laikipia at 11°C, Nairobi at 11°C, Machakos at 11°C, and Nyeri at 13°C.

Along the Coast, Lamu is expected to record a maximum of 31°C and a minimum of 23°C, while Malindi is forecast to range between 30°C and 24°C. Mombasa is expected to record a maximum of 30°C and a minimum of 21°C.

Earlier in the month, Kenya Met predicted below-average rainfall in several counties during September 2026, with dry conditions expected to persist across large parts of the country.

The forecast, issued on Wednesday, September 2, indicates that rainfall patterns in September will vary across the country, with some areas expected to receive near-average rainfall while others experience generally sunny and dry conditions.

Kenya Met said September is a transition month between the generally dry June-July-August season and the October-November-December short rains.

"September marks the climatological transition period from the June-July-August season that is generally dry over most parts of the country, to the October-November-December short rainfall season," the forecast read.

According to Kenya Met, below-average rainfall is likely over Trans Nzoia, Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, Siaya, Vihiga, Nandi, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West Pokot, Kisumu, Kericho, Nyamira, Kisii, Bomet, Migori and Homa Bay counties. 

Parts of Narok, Nakuru, Baringo and Turkana are also expected to record below-average rainfall.
