Armed robbers made it into the neighbourhood of former President Mwai Kibaki on Tchui Road, Muthaiga Estate, making away with Ksh20 million and jewelry of unknown value.
The robbers are said to have broken into the house of Kenya Horticultural Exports Ltd boss Harish Patel, where they stole the money and the items.
The incident has left the neighbours with questions as to how the gang accessed the compound, with reports indicating that no gunshot was heard.
The horticulture mogul is said to have recently revamped the house, and it is suspected that an employee may have collaborated with the thugs.
The neighbourhood has several other high-profile residents including British High Commissioner to Kenya Jane Marriot and former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero.
Starehe Sub-County Commander Julius Kiragu revealed that the robbers entered Patel's compound at around 6:30 am by scaling the rear perimeter wall.
"They first cut the electric fence, before they scaled the perimeter wall," Kiragu stated.
He revealed that two of the three were armed with pistols.
"So far we have not arrested anyone, we have, however, interrogated all the employees. We have also taken their mobile phone numbers for analysis to establish if they were in communication with the suspects," he said.
Phillip Ogutu, a guard with SGA Alarm Response, stated that he heard an alarm but there was no response from the compound.
Police have revealed that the thugs nabbed a gardener, Dickson Mwambui and then ordered him to wake the other employees.
Mwambui was then tied along with the other workers and watchman Kennedy Maiteng using sisal ropes.
"The robbers directed the househelp identified as Miriam Kalekye to take them to the room where the family was," Police said. Kalekye then took the key and directed to where Patel and his family were.
"The housegirl took the keys from the main house and opened the door for them. The gang ordered Patel and his family to surrender all the money in their possession and jewelry while holding two pistols," the police stated.
"No one was injured and there was no shooting during the incident. Apart from the cash and the jewelry nothing else was stolen from the house," a statement by police read in part.
Police have since identified that the gang used tomato crates in the compound to scale the perimeter wall.
DCI boss George Kinoti and sleuths from the Kiambu Road headquarters visited the crime scene to conduct preliminary investigations.
Due to the manner of the raid, the gang might be the same one that raided the home of Manu Chandaria in December 2020 and made away with Ksh700,000 and Ksh600,000 worth of jewelry.
