The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) has opened a probe into the deaths of two Embu brothers; Benson Njiru and Emmanuel Mutura, who allegedly died in police custody.

In a statement on Thursday, IPOA noted that it has deployed investigators to rapidly probe the matter and report their findings.

The authority noted that once investigations are complete, necessary recommendation will be made including prosecution if the officers are found culpable.

“IPOA has this morning deployed investigators from its Nairobi Headquarters to beef up their Meru Rapid Investigations counterparts who launched their investigations yesterday. This is intended to fast-track the investigations.

“Upon conclusion of the investigations and Pursuant to Section 6(a) of the IPOA Act, the authority will make recommendations including prosecution if criminal culpability is established in the part of the officers involved,” the statement read in part.

The authority has also cautioned Kenyans against taking law into their own hands, noting that they should allow investigators to probe the matter and establish what really happened.

Meanwhile, the two brothers who were reportedly arrested on Sunday, August 1, 2021, for allegedly contravening curfew regulations were found dead on Tuesday, August 3, 2021. Their bodies were taken to Embu Level 5 Hospital morgue.
