  • The mother said it pained her watching her son blindfolded and being taken off a helicopter after being arrested following the daring escape from Kamiti.

The mother to Musharaf Abdalla Akhulunga, aka Zarkawi aka Shukri; one of terror suspects that was recently re-arrested after escaping Kamiti, has pleaded with the government to spare his son and allow him serve his jail sentence.

Speaking to Nation, Akhulunga’s mother, Zuena Alima noted that it pained her to learn that her son was involved in terror-related activities.

She noted that she broke down watching her son blindfolded and being taken off a helicopter after being arrested following their daring escape from Kamiti.

Zuena further noted that in as much as her son has been involved in terrorism activities, she is still her child, adding that she plans to visit him once she gets sufficient bus fare to the city.

“I went to a neighbour’s home and watched when he was being shoved from the helicopter... It pained me so much to see him being dragged from the chopper to a waiting vehicle... I plan to visit him if I get fare to Nairobi and back.

“As a mother, I really love my son and wouldn’t wish to see him injured or killed. Let the government spare him to serve his sentence,” she told Nation.

Akhulunga and his two compatriots were arrested in Kitui on Thursday after escaping Kamiti prison 3 days earlier.

They are expected to be arraigned in court to face challenges related to escaping from prison. They will be charged alongside several prison wardens who are believed to have aided their escape.

If found guilty, an additional sentence will be added to the three terror suspects.
