Mwendwa stated that the repeated apprehension and charges preferred against him led him to pay huge fines which as a result affected his businesses.

Embattled Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa has resigned.

In a statement on the wee hours of Tuesday, November 30, 2021, Mwendwa revealed the reason behind his resignation while passing on the torch to vice president Doris Petra.

Mwendwa stated that the repeated apprehension and charges preferred against him led him to pay huge fines which as a result affected his businesses.

He also noted that the constant arrests and court arraignments had started to affect his family.

"In light of the foregoing, specifically, the frequent apprehension and detentions, which have adversely affected my family and personal business and whilst I am confident I will be cleared of any wrongdoing in the end," Mwendwa stated.

"I have today(Tuesday) in accordance with Article 42 ( 8 ) of the FXF constitution ( 2017 ) asked my Vice President Madam Doris Petra to assume all functions of the FKF president," he added.

The now-former FKF boss also stated that his resignation was in the best interest of FKF.

"My decision has been arrived at with the federation's best interest at heart. I want to thank the entire NEC family, for the support you have offered my office and the federation In general, in developing Kenyan football," he said.

He, however, claimed that the arrests have nothing to do with footballing activities in the country, rather an attack on his character.

Mwendwa was rearrested on Friday last week and was charged with four counts of Fraud. He was held by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and arraigned in court.

Mwendwa and others are accused of defrauding FKF of Ksh38 million.

He pleaded not guilty in court, however, had an application to drop the charges against him quashed.

Mwendwa was released following another court appearance on Tuesday, November 30 after posting a Ksh10 Million cash bail.
