President Uhuru Kenyatta has called on politicians to emulate him and make peace with their political rivals ahead of the August 9 General Elections.
Speaking in State House, Nairobi, Kenyatta spoke highly of his handshake with ODM leader Raila Odinga, noting that politicians should not be too stuck up on their political differences.
"Nimeshindana kisiasa na Raila, lakini choice ni kiongozi. Kama nia yako ni kazi utafanya what is the problem ya kushuka ngazi kidogo na kushika mkono ya yule unapigana naye
"Na mliona I didn't have to, hakuna mtu alinilazimisha lakini niliona nchi ni kubwa kushinda mtu binafsi," Uhuru said.
During the meeting, the President and the leaders, allied to Jubilee Party and United Democratic Movement, discussed matters of interest to Mandera County among them unfolding drought situation, food security, access to clean water, and security among other subjects.
The leaders, led by Governor Ali Roba, thanked the President for the successful implementation of several transformative infrastructure projects in Mandera County.
This comes hours after former Energy Cabinet Secretary, Charles Keter opened up on the possibility of Uhuru patching up things with Deputy President William Ruto noting that anything can happen in politics.
The ex-CS noted that there are no permanent enemies or friends and what matters is one's interests.
"In politics, anything can happen. Never rule out anything. There are no permanent friends or enemies in politics, only interests... Something can happen and all of us would be surprised. Nothing is ever cast in stone in politics," he said.
Keter said he did not know the reason Uhuru and DP Ruto's relationship dwindled, adding that it was blamed on the handshake.
"When the handshake happened, the relationship deteriorated and that is why it has been attributed to the handshake. Otherwise, if there was no handshake, maybe it could have happened still but maybe not of this magnitude
"When things happen, you try to see what has changed in the environment but I really do not know. Neither the President nor the DP has said it is because of the handshake" he said.
