The officer was handed the sentence by a Magistrate Court in Nairobi.

A police officer who was attached to the General Service Unit (GSU) has been slapped with a fifteen-year jail term after being found guilty of rape.

In a statement by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) on Friday, Anthony Ongere Moseti was handed the sentence by a Magistrate Court in Nairobi.

IPOA stated that investigation into the case began after a complaint was lodged with the authority over the incident that occurred on February 9, 2017 at the GSU headquarters.

“The investigations were informed by among other lawful provisions, Section 6 of IPOA Act which demands the Authority to investigate any complaints related to disciplinary or criminal offences committed by any member of the (police) service, whether on its own motion or on receipt of a complaint, and make recommendations to the relevant authorities, including recommendations for prosecution,” IPOA stated.

IPOA said that it forwarded the case file to Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) recommending that Moseti be arraigned on accusations of rape.

The ODPP ordered that the officer be charged after reviewing the case and concurring with IPOA that there was enough evidence to charge Moseti.

IPOA chairperson Anne Makori said that sex crimes were taken seriously by the Authority and it had heavily invested in resources to ensure that justice was served.
