Former Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang'ula has been elected the National Assembly speaker.

In the first round,  the former Bungoma Senator garnered 215 votes against Azimio la Umoja coalition candidate Kenneth Marende who got 130 votes.

The voting would have gone to the second round but Marende wrote to the clerk saying he would not take part in the second round.

President-elect William Ruto's Kenya Kwanza settled on Wetang’ula and former Kilifi governor Amason Kingi as candidates for the National Assembly Speaker and Senate Speaker respectively.

Kingi emerged victorious in the senate race after he garnered 46 votes to clinch the position.

Kingi surpassed the required threshold of two-thirds of the total votes, which translates to 45 votes of the total 67 votes.

Meru Senator Murungi Kathuri was elected the new Senate deputy speaker unopposed after his only competitor in the race, Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo, withdrew from the race.
